Don Hall introduced himself to the club with humour and warmth, reflecting on a life of varied service. Born in Hastings just before Japan’s World War II surrender, Don grew up mainly in Tauranga.
After completing theological studies at Knox College, Dunedin, he was ordained as a Presbyterian minister and married, starting both his pastoral and family life.

His path into military chaplaincy began somewhat by accident. After casually expressing interest, Don received a surprise letter welcoming him aboard. In 1976, he formally joined the Defence Forces as a chaplain, a career that would span over two decades. During this time, he served across various New Zealand bases and overseas, ultimately becoming Principal Chaplain of the Air Force.
Highlights included preaching at Westminster Abbey on the 80th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing and attending the 50th VE Day celebrations at Hyde Park.
Don reflected candidly on both the joys and the challenges of chaplaincy. He spoke of the privilege of ministering to "the whole person," from the highest ranks to service members in military prison. While the work could be lonely and costly, with his family enduring around 30 relocations, it was deeply rewarding. He shared poignant experiences, including counselling a young soldier in crisis whose life turned around years later.
After retiring from military service (three times!), Don also served in parish ministry, finding the transition from military to civilian ministry both strange and fulfilling.
Through humour, compassion, and insight, Don gave the club a glimpse of his remarkable career and life philosophy. His dedication to service, care for people in all walks of life, and love of teamwork resonate with Rotary values. We warmly welcome Don and his wealth of experience to the Milson Rotary Club.
