Mike shared his roller-coaster journey through knee troubles with his usual dash of humour. A few years ago, he started having knee issues and being a man who doesn’t shy away from alternatives, he tried PRP injections. The first jab was like magic, making him feel like a superhero for four days. But subsequent treatments didn’t quite have the same pizzazz. Frustrated, he turned to the expert opinion of surgeon Chris Williams. X-rays confirmed that both his knees were in rough shape. “It was as if my knees had decided to retire early,” Mike quipped.

Mike's story, peppered with humour and determination, highlights how a positive attitude and a bit of stubbornness can turn a daunting medical journey into a tale of triumph and laughter.

Faced with the need for bilateral knee replacements, Mike agreed to a surgery date in June. An unexpected call moved the surgery up to March 21. Despite the short notice, Mike jumped at the chance, driven by his goal to return on his stationary bike in three weeks and ride a Harley-Davidson along Route 66  USA in nine. He was determined and slightly delusional, he joked.

Post-surgery, the reality of recovery hit hard. “If you Google knee replacement surgery, you might faint,” he laughed. The hospital staff, whom Mike described as angels with a sadistic streak, got him walking the day after surgery. “I thought they were kidding when they asked me to walk, but no, they were dead serious,” Mike said. His initial "walk" around the hospital bed felt like climbing Everest.

Back home, he tackled stairs and daily exercises with the zeal of a man half his age, although he admitted to some overenthusiastic attempts that earned him stern warnings from his surgeon. His rehab included pool exercises, where he joked about causing minor traffic jams among the severe swimmers.

Six weeks post-op, his surgeon was astounded by his progress, noting that Mike seemed to forget he'd had major surgery. By then, Mike was walking into rehab centres and being told there wasn’t much more they could do for him because he was doing so well.
