Roger treated us to a tale of a very enjoyable Wednesday afternoon outing that turned into an unexpected discovery. Together with a group of friends, he ventured out to the Thompson Motorcycle Museum, located on a farm property just short of the Rongotea gun club — a place that, as Roger noted, very few people seem to know exists. | ||
The Collection The museum was established by the late Andrew Thompson, whose family has farmed the land since the 1860s. Andrew began collecting pre-1920 motorcycles after World War II, inspired in part by the bittersweet story of his own motorcycle being requisitioned during the war — then sold at auction before he could buy it back. The collection, now overseen by Andrew's son Peter, spans over 100 machines, with the oldest dating to 1904, including what is reportedly the third-oldest known BSA motorcycle. Unlike some collections, the bikes are displayed in the condition they were last ridden — giving the museum a wonderfully authentic character. | ||

A Club Outing Worth Considering? The group rounded off the evening with a meal at the Rongotea Tavern — surprisingly busy and very good value at around $22–$23 a head. With the collection valued at between $7 and $10 million, entry is just $10 per person. Roger suggested the club might consider a group outing, and warmly encouraged Peter Thompson to find a way to keep this remarkable collection intact for future generations. | ||
