At the Milson Rotary meeting on Monday 17 November 2025, members and guests were privileged to hear from Trina Sheridan, founder of the Butterfly Compassion Community (BCC).
Trina shared the inspiring story of how a simple act of kindness has evolved into a vital community resource, supporting the most vulnerable in our region.
Despite the whimsical name, BCC’s mission is all about people, not butterflies.
Humble Beginnings
BCC began four years ago in the garages of local police officers. Trina, motivated by her husband’s decades of police service and the often-challenging stories he brought home, wanted to bring some positivity to those facing tough times. The first initiative was simple: Trina and her co-founder used their own funds to assemble and distribute 350 Christmas gift bags to families identified by police as being in need. The following year, this effort grew to 1,000 gifts.
Responding to Crisis
The organisation's reach expanded dramatically during Cyclone Gabrielle, when BCC coordinated the delivery of essential baby formula and supplies to isolated families in Dartmoor and Gisborne. Through determination and community connections, they managed to arrange helicopter deliveries, demonstrating BCC’s ability to mobilise quickly in times of crisis.
Growth and Community Impact
From its grassroots origins, BCC has blossomed. What started with support for eight service organisations has now grown to 54, including the police, Women’s Refuge, Alzheimer’s Manawatu, and Opal Community. BCC collects and repurposes donated clothing, toys, household items, and linen, distributing them to those in need through a network of social workers and service agencies. To date, over 100,000 items have been given out, with an average of 17 requests fulfilled each weekday.
No Questions Asked, No Money Exchanged
A core principle of BCC is dignitythe and respect of all individuals. Recipients are never asked intrusive questions, and all items are provided free of charge. The only information needed is age, size, and specific needs. BCC also specialise in sensory packs for those with dementia, anxiety, or special needs, providing weighted toys and calming items.
Sustainability and Volunteerism
BCC operates entirely with volunteers—currently around 30—sorting, packing, and distributing donations. To support operational costs and demonstrate sustainability to funders, BCC runs a “Shop with Dignity,” where all repurposed items are sold for under $10. This allows those in need to contribute a small amount, fostering a sense of appreciation and participation.
Collaboration and Community Spirit
BCC collaborates with other organisations, such as Arohanui Hospice, to ensure nothing goes to waste and all needs are met. The city council has recognised BCC’s contribution to sustainability by diverting usable goods from landfill.
Looking Ahead
While BCC’s growth has been rapid, Trina emphasised the importance of maintaining joy and passion among volunteers by limiting shifts to three days a week. The organisation's future needs include funding for operational costs and, eventually, a vehicle for urgent deliveries, especially to hospitals.
Trina concluded by expressing heartfelt thanks to Rotary for past support and invited members to visit BCC’s “palace” at 80 Waldegrave Street. She encouraged everyone to spread the word, volunteer, or simply learn more about BCC’s work.

BCC is calling on our incredibly generous community to donate new, unwrapped gifts suitable for children of any age. Your thoughtful contribution will directly help ensure that no child goes without a special moment of joy and surprise this Christmas.
But the fun doesn't stop there! BCC warmly invite you to join the wrapping party and add a personal touch that truly transforms a gift into a treasure. Come and share the holiday cheer by helping them wrap these beautiful donations and writing a heartfelt Christmas message to accompany each present.
It's a fantastic, hands-on way to make a meaningful difference! You can drop off your gifts and/or join the wrapping crew at BCC HQ, 80 Waldegrave Street, on Tuesdays between 9:30 AM and 11:30 AM (starting November 4th) or Thursdays between 5:30 PM and 7:00 PM (starting November 6th).
